Trump's Woke Warning Overlooks Europe's Real Threat: Economic Decline.

The recent US national security strategy presents a flawed view of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" agendas represent an existential threat to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the reality. The actual danger facing the EU is not societal but economic and technological backwardness.

A Glaring Economic Gap Between Europe and the US

Statistics paint a stark contrast. From 2008 and 2023, American economic output grew by 87%, while a paltry 13.5% growth for the EU. During this time, European income per person fell from over three-quarters to just 50% of the US level. Strikingly, even the poorest US state now boasts a higher per capita income than major EU nations like Italy and France.

Currently, about 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are US-based, while only four are European.

The Innovation Shortfall: A Critical Question

This widening disparity stems from stronger productivity growth in the US, largely due to technological innovation and better use of resources. The landscape of world technology dominance is overwhelmingly US-centric. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have scaled into enterprises valued at more than ten billion dollars, compared with only fourteen in the European continent.

This gap prompts a vital question: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, where does the EU stand? Most analysts agree it is largely a contest between two involving the US and China, with European nations entering at a clear handicap.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several key reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Venture Capital: The United States has a much more robust and more dynamic network for funding startups. Europe still lacks a true capital markets union, which caps the growth potential of new firms.
  • Bureaucratic Hurdles: Excessive and fragmented regulation hinder Europe. A American entrepreneur can introduce a product under one set of laws to access a market of over 330 million. The EU, despite a bigger population, is divided among twenty-seven separate systems, creating significant market obstacles.
  • Mindset Differences: Attitudes toward risk-taking vary greatly. In parts of Europe, a startup's collapse was historically met with penalties, whereas in the United States, it is often seen as a valuable lesson.
  • Military Investment: The United States enjoys a deeply integrated academic-military-industrial complex. The continent's chronic underinvestment in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Reasons for Hopefulness

In spite of these challenges, one can find reasons for optimism. European leaders are increasingly aware of the existential challenge and have begun to propose serious reform. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the internal market highlight the necessity of major changes.

With the right incentives and rule changes, Europe's strengths might enable far greater degrees of commercial innovation.

Europe still possesses significant strengths: high-quality workforce, excellent education systems, and world-class labs. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these elements could unleash a new wave of venture creation.

Crucially, even if the EU does not take the lead in developing next-generation tech, it can still dramatically increase economic output by adopting and adapting innovations from elsewhere.

An Inflection Point

The European Union now faces a decisive crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's technological decline has been gradual. But, without decisive action to address its deep-seated problems, today's gradual weakening could give way to a rapid and permanent decline in world influence.
