Pentagon Report Finds Defense Secretary Put Military Personnel in Jeopardy with Messaging App Chat.

A highly anticipated Pentagon review has concluded that Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth violated official protocols by disclosing secret intelligence in a private Signal group, as stated by a source familiar with the report.

Details of the Incident

The online conversation in question included details about a planned air attack in Yemen targeting Houthi fighters. This discussion came to light after a journalist for the Atlantic was added as a participant.

Other individuals in the group reportedly included JD Vance, CIA director John Ratcliffe, and former security advisor Mike Waltz. The investigation focused solely on the actions of Hegseth, as the other officials are not employed at the Department of Defense.

Signal is a commercially offered messaging app that was not authorized for transmitting classified information.

Potential Risk to Forces

The internal investigation determined that the information circulated by Hegseth was classified and could have endangered the lives of US troops if it had been intercepted by a foreign enemy force.

Notably, the report acknowledged that Hegseth possessed the authority to declassify the material he shared, though it was unclear whether he formally did so.

Secretary's Reaction

The informed individual indicated that Hegseth declined an interview by the inspector general. Instead, he provided a brief written statement.

In his response, Hegseth asserted he only disclosed details that would not have endangered personnel or jeopardized the mission. He added that he had the right to declassify material and considered the investigation to be partisan.

Future Actions

The completed report has been shared with Congress. An unclassified version is anticipated to be released in the coming days.
