A recent study suggests that individuals who discontinue popular weight-loss injections like Wegovy and Mounjaro tend to recover lost weight much more quickly than those who halt conventional diet and exercise regimens.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while obese people can lose substantial amounts of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the mass returns at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month once they quit.
"Individuals purchasing these drugs need to be informed of the danger of rapid weight regain when the medication concludes," warns lead investigator Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery implies a reversion to starting mass in about a year and a half.
Comparing Therapies
The analysis, which reviewed dozens of trials involving over 9,000 of patients, compared the outcomes of GLP-1 agonists with other pills.
Scientists point out that people who lose weight through diet and exercise generally experience a slower weight regain—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Doctors suggest the way of the drugs is key to understanding the amplified regain.
GLP-1 drugs imitate a natural hormone called GLP-1, which moderates appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations several times higher than the body's typical production may cause the body to produce less of its endogenous hormone, and may also diminish sensitivity to its effects," noted Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Discontinuation of this hormone supplement results in appetite is unsuppressed, making overeating far more likely."
A Chronic Condition?
Medical guidelines recommend the injections for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside recommended diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians say that, considering the high risk of relapse, the treatment is often ongoing.
This view is reinforced by drug manufacturers, who say that the results "underscore the persistent character of excess weight," comparing it to managing conditions like diabetes.
User Accounts
Users who have discontinued the medication report a sudden resurgence of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and you become starving," described an individual.
The struggle is compounded if individuals have not established lasting dietary or behavioural changes during treatment.
Growing Interest
Survey data indicate that a significant number of adults in the UK have used these injections in the past year, with demand being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many obtain the medications through private prescriptions rather than the NHS.
In conclusion, experts caution that while these medications are potent tools for weight loss, they are not a permanent cure and long-term success hinges on combined behavioural support.
