At least 13 people lose their lives and ninety-eight injured in rail accident in Mexico.

A tragic train crash in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident expected to reignite critical opposition regarding the speed and handling of the country's key public works projects.

The disaster took place on the Interoceanic Corridor train, a line developed to link the Atlantic Ocean and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to offer an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.

“We shall meticulously determine the reasons behind this tragedy,” stated the country's president.

The president confirmed that, of the around 250 people on board, another 98 were injured, with five of those in serious condition. The leader stated plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those involved.

Major Initiative of Previous Administration

The Interoceanic Train was a signature infrastructure project of the former leader, whose presidency finished the year before. This project was a hallmark of his administration's strategic goals for the southeastern region.

Another multi-billion dollar rail project from that period, a passenger and freight circuit around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the comprehensive effort to kickstart the economic fortunes of a historically poorer part of the country.

Project Execution and Worries

The development of both rail lines was overseen by the nation's military, marking a notable increase of its role in national infrastructure. They were executed at an fast-tracked speed, surpassing predictions to be partially launched before the end of that administration.

However, this fast-paced schedule had concurrently fueled persistent questions over safety standards.

  • Sunday's crash was the third event on the Interoceanic Train this year.
  • This encompasses an earlier crash this month when a train smashed into a truck at a crossing.
  • The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-fatal derailments.

Appeals for Audit and Pause

In the wake of the disaster, the chief of a major opposition party demanded an immediate pause in the building and running of all such projects.

This pause was suggested until the completion of a full technical review. The party emphasized that the loss of life "demands prompt explanations."

In reply, the president asserted that the train had been operating in complete compliance with all safety requirements. Commitments were given that the government would continue to be "diligent" in both the development and running of these strategic undertakings.
